WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME
In this Post I will be explaining exactly what is a Domain Name.

A domain name is a Web or Internet address (i.e.www.whybuyadomain.com), that maps to an IP Address (67.20.69.241) representing a numerical point on the Internet. The ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the governing body that coordinates mappings between IP addresses and domain names across the Internet stored in the DNS (Domain Name System). Allowing people, like me and you easy to find Web sites by entering their domain names instead of the IP addresses which is hard to remember when visiting a website.

Think of an IP address as a radio frequency for your favorite radio station (ie. 102.7 MHz) and the domain name as the name of the station (i.e. KIIS FM) that may be programmed into your radio. Also, IP address occasionally change (like radio frequencies) such as with the switch to HD radio. The DNS hides all this complexity from users so they need only remember domain names such as (“www.whybuyadomain.com“).

All domain names include at least a top-level and a second-level domain.

A top-level domain (TLD) is the rightmost part of the domain name after the last dot. The most common TLDs, generic TLDs (or gTLDs), are .com, .net, and .org originally intended for use for commercial businesses, network infrastructure and non-profit organizations respectively. Recently several other popular gTLDs have been added including .biz, .info and .name. These common extensions have certain guidelines, but are usually available to any registrant, anywhere in the world.

Among the gTLDs several have much more stringent requirements for applicants including:

  • .gov is reserved for United States government organizations
  • .aero is reserved for the air transport industry only

Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) are all 2 letter domains intended for registrants of particular geographic locations, such as .zw(Zimbabwe), .ca(Canada), .dk(Denmark), .ec(Ecuador), .uk (United Kingdom), .us(United States), . bz(Belize), and .ie (Republic of Ireland)

Some ccTLDs have become popular by serendipitous coincidence with the English language as with Tuvalu, the Federated States of Micronesia and Samoa where the respective popular .tv, .fm and .ws TLDs originate. TLDs are created exclusively by ICANN and can not be purchased by private individuals or organizations.

The second-level domains (sometimes SLDs) are typed to the left of the TLD, and are the domains most people and organizations buy for themselves or their businesses. Second-level domains commonly refer to the organization that registered the domain name with an ICANN-accredited domain-name registrar, and must be unique within their TLD.
